Overview
Suikoden is the adaption of Water Margin, one of the four great Chinese classical novels. The original story tells how a group of 108 outlaws are granted amnesty when they form an army to resist foreign invaders and suppress rebel forces. Winding through the maze of political and social ancient China, their adventure brings them up against the apathy and conservatism of the current government, where very little regard exists for the truly brave.

北宋末期、政治の腐敗と役人の横暴がはびこる中、理不尽によって人生を狂わされた人々が各地で社会から弾き出されていく。高位の武官であった林冲は陰謀により地位を失い、放浪の末に梁山泊へとたどり着く。魯智深や武松もまた、それぞれの事情から社会に居場所を失い、流転の末に同じ運命をたどる。 梁山泊には当初、王倫が首領として存在していたが、嫉妬深く器量に乏しく、有能な人材を受け入れようとしなかったため、組織は小規模で閉鎖的なままであった。そこに晁蓋が仲間を率いて加わり、王倫を排して新たな首領となる。これにより梁山泊は、志を同じくする者たちが集う結束の強い集団へと変わり、各地の豪傑たちが次第に集結していく。 やがて宋江が登場し、その人望によって多くの者の信頼を集める。晁蓋の死後、宋江は首領の座を継ぎ、梁山泊をさらに大きな勢力へと発展させる。各地から集まった豪傑たちは結束し、やがて梁山泊は一大勢力として存在感を強めていく。
