13世紀、イラン東部の街トゥース。奴隷の少女シタラは奴隷商人のはからいで学者の未亡人ファーティマの家に引き取られ、ファーティマやその息子ムハンマドから学問の大切さを教わる。その後ムハンマドはさらなる学びを求め、ニーシャプールへと旅立つ。 8年後、トゥースにトルイ率いるモンゴルの軍勢が襲来する。シタラとファーティマは家の地下に隠れていたが、トルイとその家来に見つかり、ファーティマが大切にしていた『エウクレイデスの原論』の写本を奪われる。写本を取り返そうとしたシタラは兵士に斬りかかられ、庇ったファーティマが命を落とす。シタラは捕虜として他の市民とともにモンゴルに送られるが、その途上、奴隷仲間と死別し、さらにニーシャプールも襲撃されたことを知り絶望する。通訳の少年シラの勧めで、シタラはファーティマと名を変え、トルイの妃ソルコクタニの侍女となるが、侵略された側の境遇や心情に無頓着な彼女に、モンゴルへの復讐心をますます強める。 1229年、チンギス・カン亡きあと、遺言により三男のオゴタイが皇帝に即位する。しかしチンギス・カンの財産や軍事力は末子のトルイが継承したため、王族内で権力のねじれが生じていた。ファーティマはソルコクタニから次男チャガタイを探るよう命じられるが失敗し、オゴタイの妃ドレゲネの前に引き出される。ドレゲネはかつてモンゴルと敵対していたメルキト族長の妻で、夫や一族をモンゴルに討たれた過去があった。互いの境遇を知った二人は結託し、モンゴル帝国への復讐のために動き出す。
