Overview
Set in the Heian era, when the Fujiwara clan schemed to seize power at the Imperial Court, a court lady's mysterious disappearance suddenly occurs in the capital. Tasked by the Emperor, who fears it may be the work of the oni, Ariwara no Narihira encounters a young man named Sugawara no Michizane. 藤原氏が朝廷の実権を掌握しつつあった時代。平安京の貴族たちの間では、その藤原氏の屋敷から夜な夜な下女が行方不明になるという事件の噂で持ちきりとなっていた。貴族たちは「鬼の仕業」と言い出し、その噂は帝の耳にも届くようになった。都の守護を務める在原業平は、帝の命を受け犯人捜しを始めるが、下女誘拐の犯人として自身の縁者である紀長谷雄が捕縛されてしまう。長谷雄の無実を証明しようとする業平は、捕縛の場に居合わせた長谷雄の学友・菅原道真に協力を依頼し、不承不承協力を約束した道真と共に犯人捜しを続けることになった。 捜査の甲斐あって下女の行方不明事件を解決した業平と道真は、以降も都で起こる怪奇事件を解き明かしていくが、次第に事件の背後に関わる藤原氏と伴氏の勢力争いに巻き込まれることになる。
