Overview

Defeat—and the Allied occupation of Japan under the GHQ began. After the fall of the Shidehara Kijūrō Cabinet, Hatoyama Ichirō, who had been expected to become prime minister, was purged from public office. In May 1946, Shigeru Yoshida assumed the post of prime minister.
