生まれつき霊を引き寄せてしまう霊媒体質の青年・幻燈河螢多朗は、幼馴染の寶月詠子とともに霊障の呪いに巻き込まれたという過去を持つ。そのため、周囲の人間を巻き込むことを恐れて引きこもりとなるも、詠子の献身的な支えによって社会復帰を目指し、首席合格で大学に入学を果たす。さらに詠子の勧めで家庭教師のアルバイトをすることになり、詠子の従姉妹で、両親が事故死したために彼女の家に住む、IQ160を超える天才少女・寶月夜宵を受け持つことになる。 実は夜宵は生まれ持って強い霊視能力を持ち、先の事故の際に、自身が後に「空亡」と名付けた謎の悪霊によって母親の霊魂が攫われるのを目撃していた。そこで夜宵は「空亡」を倒して母親の霊を取り戻すため、強力な悪霊や神霊をぬいぐるみに捕縛し、収集し、戦わせる「悪霊捕縛」（ダークギャザリング）を行っていた。そのため、霊を引き寄せやすい螢多朗は、夜宵に気に入られる。 当初は健全な社会復帰のためにオカルトとは距離を置こうとした螢多朗であったが、自身や詠子の呪いを祓うことを決意し、夜宵に協力することを決める。こうして、2人はより強力な悪霊を集めるため、日本各地の心霊スポットを巡る。
